PROPOSED LEGISLATION LOOKS TO INCREASE EFFICIENCY, CONVENIENCE, AND SECURITY OF CONCEALED WEAPON PERMIT APPLICATIONS
Skipper Supports Legislation

DeFuniak Springs, FL (January 8, 2014) – Senate Bill 544 aims to assist citizens in applying for concealed weapons by making this a service offering of Tax Collectors. The proposed legislation would increase the number of physical locations available to citizens for permit application processing. Tax Collector Rhonda Skipper supports the legislation and welcomes the opportunity to add another beneficial service for local citizens.

The proposed legislation would allow tax collectors to work as agents of the Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services to process the concealed weapon permit applications. Due to the driver license services offered by most tax collector offices, employees already undergo background checks prior to handling highly sensitive information. Additionally, the tools necessary to provide the service, including fingerprint machines, cameras, and computers are already available at most tax collector offices.

“Providing this service simply makes sense. It allows for increased efficiency and convenience for our citizens while still maintaining the security of the information. This new service delivery could be accomplished with a minimal increase in additional resources,” said Rhonda Skipper, Walton County Tax Collector.

Permit applications are not expected to increase should the legislation pass. However, the processing time for the permit applications would speed up significantly as well as the citizen access to this existing government service.
