Motor Vehicles

The Walton County Tax Collector is an agent of the Florida Department of Motor Services. Our office can assist customers with title work, vehicle registrations, license plate transactions, mobile home registrations, and disabled parking permits.

Our office anticipates offering Florida Drivers License services beginning mid-year 2012.

All motor vehicles and trailers in the State of Florida must be registered and/or titled. It is the responsibility of the Tax Collector, in her capacity as agent for the Department of Motor Services, to provide the necessary services and operations to accomplish this job. The Tax Collector works very closely with this state agency to ensure all transactions are concluded according to state statutes.

Sales Tax

The State of Florida has a state sales tax of 6%, which as an agent for the Florida Department of Revenue, the Tax Collector collects on transactions where applicable. Sales tax is collected when a customer transfers title to a motor vehicle, vessel or mobile home. NOTE: If a vehicle is traded in, sales tax is collected on the difference between the price of the vehicle and the trade in.  In addition any County imposed tax is collected.

Sales tax is required, by Florida Statute, at 6% of the purchase price, less trade-in on vehicle purchases. As an agent for the Florida Department of Revenue, the tax collector is responsible for collection and disbursement of this tax.

Applying for Replacement License Plate, Validation Decal or Parking Permit

Application can be made for a replacement license plate, validation decal or parking permit if lost, damaged or stolen.

Form HSMV 83146 must be completed and returned to the Tax Collector's Office when applying for a replacement.

If you are reporting a plate, decal or permit stolen, you
will also be required to provide a photocopy of the law enforcement card with case number and reporting agency. (This is a procedure enacted in summer 2011.)
